Georges Rouault Exhibit Visits Westmont

Reynolds Gallery will host Georges Rouault’s Miserere et Guerre: This Anguished
World of Shadows, a cycle of prints that explores the connections between war,
suffering and mercy, Aug. 23 through Oct. 18. There will be an opening reception
Thursday, Aug. 23, 4-6 p.m.

The Museum of Modern Art has called Rouault “one of the few major figures in
20th century painting.” The Museum of Biblical Art put together this exhibition of
the French Expressionist’s work, which reflects his experiences during the first World
War. “The faith of Georges Rouault presents the mystery of redemption and its
contemporary relevance,” says Gallery Director Tony Askew. “It is fitting that the
Reynolds Gallery be privileged to share this work, which reflects our mission of
presenting recognized excellence in today’s art world.”

The gallery will show 24 pieces from the series, many of them evoking scenes
from the life of Jesus and other Biblical people. Rather than being merely illustrative,
the visceral imagery reflects the artist’s very personal convictions and responses to
the world in which he lived. Throughout the series, Rouault forges visual
connections between human and divine suffering. He created the plates between
1914 and 1927, but did not print them until 1948. By then he had lived through
both World Wars and witnessed great destruction in his country. Nevertheless, these
rough-hewn images communicate hope in the possibility of redemption.
