Retired Ambassador Talks about Adventures

Lauren Kahea Moriarty, a retired U.S. ambassador, explores the role of being an international diplomat at a free, public lecture, “Adventures in Diplomacy: Making a Difference,” Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m. at Westmont’s Kerrwood Hall in Hieronymus Lounge.
“The recent killing of Christopher Stevens, a U.S. ambassador in Libya, has focused attention on diplomats, yet few Americans know much about the work and lives of diplomats,” she says.
Moriarty, who was assigned to China, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the U.S. during her nearly 30 years as a diplomat, negotiated trade agreements, helped prevent civil war and famine, assisted American citizens abroad and worked on a broad range of economic and financial issues. She was U.S. ambassador to Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), diplomat-in-residence at the East-West Center in Honolulu and director of East African Affairs.
Since 2010, Moriarty has been dean of academics at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, a U.S. Department of Defense executive education institution that brings together security practitioners from across the Asia-Pacific region.
